A World in the Balance
Balance of Pentacles
The Balance of Pentacles was created by the new magocracy as a system of checks and balances to ensure that wizardry would never again reach a point where it could cause cataclysmic events. There are five member nations in the Balance of Pentacles: Kveldan, Qimtar, Guardia, Sternius and Belmora. Ahlfar and Minos are primarily populated with shamanistic or druidic cultures and do not have significant numbers of wizards present within their borders. At any given time, a member nation has no more than 210 wizards ranking from First to Twentieth. The ranks correspond with the number of wizards who can possess that rank thus there are 20 wizards who are titled Twentieth Mage but there is only one First Mage. Ranks do not always reflect the power of the wizard as many things can determine one’s standing in the hierarchy. Current members are always on the lookout for talent as innate magic aptitude does not seem to be as common as it was in previous ages. Membership is by invite only and it is often the case that an individual must provide an item or perform a task that gets the attention of current members. Small enclaves are often set up in areas that are promising for magical research with the current hotspot being a town called Glimmer which is suspected to be the epicenter of the events that razed the continent.
